About the Ashiri-za
Ashiri-za, founded in 1995, is the only company that performs ningyō-joruri in Hokkaido. In order to re-establish this classical Japanese artform in a city where no such tradition previously existed, the company travels across the island to perform and conducts regular workshops about Japanese puppet theater.
To represent the excitement and opportunites of a new beginning for this traditional artform, the company choose the Ainu word ashiri (meaning new) and the Japanese za (troupe, theatre) for their name.
